This is a short documentary on the installation that I was lucky enough to see being built. Obviously, the film doesn’t come close to giving it justice, but allows for a little insight into the wonderful mind of Mr. Garry. Thank you again, Mark, for allowing me to see your work and talk a bit with you. I also, highly recommend visiting the Mattress Factory if you are ever in Pittsburgh.

I am ever so thankful for the brilliant and wonderful Marian Bantjes. Her insights on her work provide such an awareness of the world that I am inexhaustibly intrigued by. The symbiosis of poetry, visually and thoughtfully, and design filled with love provides me with endless inspiration. I hope you enjoy this wonderful video as much as I do.

4v2: For vs. To

Marketing

In the video from the post below, Seth Godin mentions the idea of “For vs. To” in that the people making a difference are the ones doing things for their audience rather than marketers doing things to them. I simply want to enforce this idea and express that this is exactly the reason this blog exists. I want it to serve as a resource for anybody with a love of type, good ideas, design, marketing, and/or culture. Rather than monetizing against something like this, I would much rather know that I am serving as a benefit to others and perhaps provide a platform in which people with similar viewpoints can connect. Therefore, if you are one of these people (or even if you’re not), I’d love to hear from you. Leave a comment and let me know what you think. Also, I will gladly answer any emails at [email protected].

Best,
Paul Stonier

Neutrality Through Censorship?

Advertising

BBDO recently produced a very respectable advertisement for Swanson in The Advocate involving a lesbian couple. The AFA (American Family Association) is asking Campbell to pull the ad in order to stay “neutral”. However, it seems bizarre that the concept of neutrality would be based on a lack of discussion, rather than an all-inclusive discussion in which not one side is taken but rather all sides are presented equally. This narrow-minded viewpoint seems archaic and outdated, not to mention fruitless. Read about it here.

Type Battles #33: Futura Holiday Dingbats

Every once in a while Typophile hosts a new battle for fellow members to compete in a type nerd’s version of a street battle. The current battle is to create 5 Futura dingbats

“As with any street battle, there is no panel of judges and no prize — only the ability to call yourself the best on the block.”

Here’s my entry. I’m one of the few to try to do it for Futura Bold. Also, since the limit of the space when dealing with such heavy strokes, I decided to make them very simpler and more iconic. There haven’t been many other entries yet. Any challengers up for the task?
